"One Must Imagine Sisyphus Happy"

Updated: Nov 3

Do you remember Sisyphus, the figure from ancient Greek mythology who was always rolling that massive boulder up a hill? Condemned by the gods, he watched the boulder roll back down every single day as he neared the top. Not to be dramatic, but my name is Sisyphus, and I'm the creator of an eight-week manager training program, blending self-paced training with weekly live facilitation. 👋

Ironically, I'm not a stranger to anything listed above. You'd think it would be simpler.

Yet, in this project, I realized that the methods that worked for me in the past no longer served my vision for my work. So, I found myself diving headfirst into new processes, programs, and delivery techniques.

If we had a Plan B for filming or post-production, please understand we probably went with Plan Z. It was a string of mishaps: lost footage, software glitches, multiple team members (including myself) with viral crud... trimming cough after cough out of my videos...

...All while highlighting, on-screen, the importance of a growth mindset.

There were multiple moments when I said aloud [sometimes to no one]: "I shouldn't be doing this."

Then, last week, I had a call with a much more experienced business owner in a similar line of work.

When describing my project (and the current state of things), she reminded me, "This is the creative stage." If this product is to be utilized for the next five years or so, this initial burst of energy will become what I continuously look back on.

It occurred to me how right she must be. In the moments of frustration, there have also been breakthroughs, laughter, and mini-victories—all worth cherishing.

Later in the day, I remembered a quote from the French philosopher and author Albert Camus: "One must imagine Sisyphus happy."

Sometimes, resilience comes from assigning meaning to our circumstances—or perhaps just laughing at the absurdity of it all. I'm happy to share that I'm powering through the editing now with a renewed sense of amusement and a greater sense of pride. Pride that we've figured out how to bring a fuzzy and purpose-driven vision into a very real existence.
